Throughout history, the city of Aleppo has been a strategic point for trade between the Euphrates River and the Mediterranean Sea. The historic old town area was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. With no longer a major center for trade, Aleppo is still an important node of the regionīs traffic routes as well as home for many different cultures and religions. Along the historic Hejaz Railways, Aleppo connects Istanbul with Damascus, Amman, and in earlier days, the Arabian Peninsula.
