Throughout history, Gaza was a prospering trade hub. With the Arab-Israeli war in 1948, a wave of refugees swept into the city; since then, poverty, unemployment and poor living conditions heve dominated the city due to the extremly tight control Israel keeps over the borders, airspace, and coast. Even the most basic needs, like drinking water, electricity, and educational and health supplies, are regulated by Israel, which has severely limited the amount of goods allowed into the territory and the city.
