Egypt

As an Islamic centre of political influence and power, a country with a capital that is the only megacity in the region, and a powerful member of the Arab League, Egypt is an indispensable member of HUMMUS. The country´s problems, however, are vast. The government, a de facto dictatorship, is dominated by corruption and favouritism. Meanwhile the Muslim Brotherhood and a growing democratization movement are placing domestic pressure on long-time president Hosni Mubarak.
