Israel

Widely fragmented inside, threatened with attacks by adversarial neighbors and internal groups, and hated by surrounding countries, this small country needs to find its role in the region. The efforts of the founding fathers and the military success of several wars seem to be in vain if Israel fails to reach a comprehensive and sustainable peace with its neighbours and all Arab countries. The balace between attempting to be a Zionist Jewish, democratic state, and the inevitable need for cooperation in the region constitute an almost intractable challenge for the country.
