Hama, which has an industry- and agricultural-based economy, lies near the center of the Aleppo-Damascus city axis. Characterized by Ottoman archietcture, the city is internationally known for the huge wooden water wheels, which were a part of the city´s irrigation systems. Today, these water wheels have almost entirely been replaced by modern electric pumping systems.
